The 18th May proved an exciting day at Finn Valley with the Annual Primary Schools Athletics taking place in what was fantastic weather helping to make the event even more enjoyable for the competitors, their teachers, parents and other family members who came along to support.
The Primary Schools Athletics now in its 48th year is the highlight of the schools athletics calendar and is the first step into athletics for many young people in the county. Indeed it is where many notable national and international athletes honed their emerging athletic talents and experienced their first real taste of competition. Local man Jason Quigley world ranked number 3 champion was also in attendance while on a few days break from his training camp in Futerteventura to which he returns on Sunday to continue preparation for his next fight in July. Jason was of course a competitor at this competition during his primary school days.
Schools from across Co Donegal and beyond were represented at the event with a total entry of 1,000 plus children from 68 schools on the day.
Like all events, the Primary Schools Sports depends on the efforts of all involved and a special word of thanks must go to all the teachers and the schools that engaged and also to the officials at FVAC who did a magnificent job on this the 48th year of the event.
This has been a busy period at FVAC for underage and senior athletics and the club look forward to hosting the Donegal Children’s games on Monday night 21st May and the Ulster Championships for primary age groups ages 9/13 on the June 3rd which will complete the early season programme at Finn Valley.
Later in the year the Primary Schools Cross Country will take place on the 25th of September.
In the coming days a panel will assemble to adjudicate best boy and best girl with a view to awarding the John Carlin Annual Awards for which the eligibility is, those students in their final year at primary school.
